I wasn't able to make it to the gym today and I'm gonna attempt this at home:
"Barbara"
20 Pull-ups
30 Push-ups
40 Sit-ups
50 Squats
5 Rounds for time
Sure, it's doable, but 5 freaking rounds? I need to figure out a sub for pull-ups, though.
I'm doing well on the diet, however, the scale doesn't think so. *sigh* I do know that I cannot have nuts in the house. Too easy to grab handfuls of them. Cashews have been calling my name lately and that may have been my downfall this week. However, I will stick with this way of eating, because I like the concept and think it's a good one.
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go and find Mr. Peanut...
...that I won't be able to walk tomorrow. I should just OD on Advil right now.
Since it had be a gazillion years since I did a lat pull-down, I am feeling it today. I only did 40 pounds, but it made me one sore mofo. However, if it helps me on my journey to even do 1/2 of a pull-up, then so be it. I did them again today in my warm-up instead of my pseudo pull-ups.
So, today we did deadlifts. 5-5-5-5-5. Started out at 95 pounds and maxed out at 150 on the final 5 reps and set. I will definitely feel these tomorrow as I always do when I do deadlifts. And it's been awhile since they were done.
Then we did a WOD of 3 rounds/time of : Run 400m (yay!), 30 sit-ups, and 30 thrusters at 55#. Those thrusters just about killed me as my legs were already spent from the lifts and my faux running. I was soaked after this WOD and I don't sweat a lot to begin with.
Tomorrow is a rest day and I need it. That and the fact that the sprinkler guy is coming out to fix a station that doesn't work. Not that it matters as we're probably going to be in water restrictions pretty soon. The grass in the area where station doesn't work has turned into hay. Diva dog likes to roll in that area and it sticks to her like glue. Now I have hay everywhere in my house. *sigh*
And on that note, I just downed a cocktail of Advil and Claritin and am good to go.
I couldn't figure out how to type Butthead's laugh.
Today's WOD was doing snatches. I'm pretty sure we have never done them before. I watched the video on how to do them a gazillion times, but wasn't too confident in my ability. We tried them anyway. I think I swing my arms out too far to get the bar over my head, but I got the main idea. My partner happened to have her daughter's video camera in her car so we filmed ourselves doing them. We're gonna email the video to our former trainer, who lives in CO now, and have him critique our snatches.
MY GOD, PEOPLE! GET YOUR MINDS OUT OF THE GUTTER!!!!
Sheesh.
Then we did a WOD of 5 rounds for time of 20 pull-ups, 20 dips, and 20 double unders. I still can't do a pull-up, but split them between pulling myself up on the smith machine bar and doing lat pull-downs. My partner thinks that the pull-downs will help build up more strength to do an actual pull-up. I agree. She does a type of jumping kipping pull-up, but thought hers sucked today. She felt she was getting weaker. We thought maybe having her do pull-downs during the warm-up might help. It can't hurt. Anyway, I finished in 15:55.
I definitely feel those deadlifts from yesterday. Ouch!
Today's WOD just about did me in. I'm still wiped out from it. Scheduled today was supposed to a 5K run. Eff that! We haven't done any running in probably a month...mainly because the gym was closed for a bit, then I was on vacation, and the WODs have been mostly strength training as of late. Since we didn't want to run a 5K, my partner made one up today.
5 rounds for time of 400m run, 20 sumo deadlift high pull (55#), and 30 wall ball shots with a 12# ball (normally 20#, but we don't have one at that weight).
I only did 3 rounds because I simply ran out of steam. It could have been from lack of caffeine, or that Sunday and Monday are my low carb days, or just because it's Moanday in gerneral. It looked a lot easier on paper, but it was a beyotch and then some. My partner did finish 5 rounds, but even admitted it was two rounds too many. I think wall ball shots rank right up there with my hatred of running and burpees.
There's a man at my gym who used to be a trainer that's in his early 70s and is in fantastic shape. He gave me a tip on push-ups. He told me to to keep my head up and look straight ahead as I do them until I can build my strength back up. Made a big difference in keeping my back straight (I had noticed that it was starting to sag as I came up). I still can't do a full push-up on my toes, but on the sissy ones, I can go all the way down now. I couldn't do that when I first started.
My weakness is definitely upper body strength, but I still rule at squats!
Um, yeah, well...I kinda got bored updating this thing and then I went on vacation where I drank like a fish and then some.
We went to San Francisco for a few days and then to my parents house in beautiful San Juan Capistrano. It had been a long time since I was in CA in the summer and forgot how nice it is this time of the year...especially when I came home to triple digit temps. Blech. I lived in SF for four years and lived in the part of town that rarely saw the sun. We didn't have any fog while we were there, though. I had bought a way overpriced sweatshirt at the hotel, thinking I would need it when we walked the GG bridge, but it was actually quite warm up there. The hotel we were staying at upgraded us to Club Level, which meant free food and drinks. Tip your bartender well and he will make you some strong ones!
Needless to say, I didn't do any exercise that week.
So.
Back to the gym this week. We do push-ups in our warm up and my partner and I both agree that my push-ups have been sucking lately. I've noticed that they've been harder for me to do. I guess I need to build more strength there.
A lot of our WODs have been strength training. We did shoulder presses, front squats, and today was dumbbell swings, pull-ups and more squats. The other day we did a 5-5-5-3-3-3-1-1-1-1 of front squats. I maxed out at 100# on my last rep!!! Squats are very easy for me.
My diet du jour is Cheat to Lose. It's a carb cycling way of eating. I like that because I like love carbs. I had downloaded the eBook, but the publisher made it so you couldn't print it. Like maybe some of us would like to have been able to print, oh, I don't know..maybe the RECIPES????? They have a pay website, although, it's a little clunky. I was doing it on my own and did well, but sometimes I need ideas on what to eat, so I joined it. I started last Sunday and have already lost 3 lbs. Of course, that may be alcohol weight, but I'll take it.
There's a 3 week priming phase, but I skipped that part as I already did that. The website lets you start at the core phase which is, 2 days low carb, 2 days low GI/GL carbs, 2 days high GI/GL carbs and then you get to eat whatever you want on the 7th day. Sounds good to me! Tomorrow is my cheat day! WOOOOOOO!
My gym is opening back up tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111111
It was supposed to open up today, but they were waiting for the cable guy to show up. So we headed to the park instead. Big mistake.
We set up a WOD to run up and down the soccer field twice, do 50 bench jumps, and 50 thrusters using rocks for added weight...3 rounds. As all of you know in south central Tejas, it's been hotter and more humid than a mofo lately. Since I wasn't anticipating working out outside today, I didn't bring any water with me...well, I really forgot bring it in the first place. Another big mistake.
I don't due well with humidity. I find that when it's humid out, I get winded a lot more quickly. I did the first round and then when I started the second one, I knew it wasn't gonna happen. I could barely run (not that I'm good at it anyway) and had to stop here and there. As I was ready to the second round of bench jumps, I told my partner I had to stop. I really needed to listen to my body and it was telling me that if you continued, you were gonna pass out. So I stopped as I think I was dehydrated. My partner continued, but even towards the end, she was spent.
I was gonna do 50 burpees to make up for quitting, but um...I don't think it's gonna happen.
Let's see...
I got an official letter from my gym's corporate that it will indeed be opening back up and because of our inconvenience, we won't be billed for the month of May. Kaching! More money for me to stimulate the economy with!
Monday, I did Chelsea. Only I modified it some. As many rounds of 5 sit-ups, 10 push-ups, 15 squats, in 20 minutes. I did 17. I seem to be stuck at the number.
Tuesday, we headed to the gym and did 75 push-ups, 50 sumo deadlifts, 50 dips, 30 pull-ups, and 25 modified handstand push-ups. That workout sucked.
Today, we headed to the park and made up our own WOD. Neither one of us wanted to workout today, so we punished ourselves for it. I had commented that I was surprised that lunges were never in WODs except for the filthy fifty. Silly me.
Ran the length of the soccer field, did 50 squats, ran back and did walking lunges the width of the field up and back, ran the length of the field and did 10 burpees (where I stuck my hand in an ant area), ran back and did 25 bench jumps. Repeat. Finished in 25:56. That workout sucked too. I am already feeling the lunges as I did about 160 of them (80 each leg). I haven't done lunges in a loooooooong time. I never liked them, either. Bitch, bitch, bitch.
Tomorrow, we're just gonna work on lifts.
I need some cawfee...
No, Mark...I haven't given up.
Monday--Did I work out? I don't think so. My son had some doctor appointments that morning. I may have done something at home. I don't remember. Sunday, I did something, but I don't remember what it was. I better start taking some Ginkgo Biloba while I am at it, too.
Tuesday, my partner and I went around looking for gyms. We checked out the Y by my house, which is very nice, but no squat rack. There were also the priciest. Then we went to Gold's. I was prepared for the hard sell, but surprisingly I didn't get one. However, during the tour I had no idea WTF the girl giving the tour was saying because it was so LOUD in there. My husband really didn't want me to join there just because of all the contract disputes he's read about them. I really didn't either...loudness aside. It's too spread out for what we do. We did do 'Cindy"... 5 pull-ups, 10 push-ups, 15 air squats. As many rounds in 20 minutes. I'm sure people thought we were nuts. The dude that was working in with me on the assisted pull-up machine was fascinated by what were doing...enough to check out CrossFit. Anyway, I decided to stay with Anytime. The closest one to me is only a mile farther than my original gym, so it was doable. But it is pretty far for my friend to drive.
Wednesday, I was gonna go to the gym and do deadlifts, but my son's school got canceled because a pole fell during the storm and knocked out all the power, so they sent everyone home. Son #1 thought he should have been allowed to stay home too, never mind that he doesn't go to that school anymore. I sent him off grumbling to the bus stop. I did dumbbell deadlifts at home instead.
But then I got some good news! My partner drove by our original gym and found out it's opening back up at the end of May! I guess the trainer there is taking it over. We are very excited.
Thursday, I met my partner at the park by her house. She made me run around the soccer field. Blah. Then we did some 50 funky push-ups (I think they are a way to get you to a handstand push-up eventually) and 50 box jumps and then ran the field again. Have I mention that I hate and suck at running? My partner ran it 4 times!
And finally, today, my partner met me at my house and then I drove to the gym, where we did Daniel. 50 pull-ups, 400m run, 21 thrusters, 800m run, 21 thrusters, 400m run, 50 pull-ups. It's been awhile since we've done that type of workout and it's been awhile since we done running. And it showed.
So now y'all are caught up in my exciting workout life. You can die in peace now.
My gym is still in lock down. When you owe a bunch of back rent, it happens. There are a few others close by, but not that close. We went to one yesterday, but I don't want to go there every day because it is kind of far. Plus, they didn't have a squat rack or a 45# bar. WTF? Gym owners, a Smith Machine is worthless.
Wednesday, we just went to the playground in my partner's 'hood. Which worked out well. We were gonna meet again there today, but my whole body is screaming. Today is actually a 'rest day', and I need it.
Yesterday, we went to the sort of far away gym and did deadlifts and modified handstand push-ups. We had to make do with the straight bar they had. V. weighed it and thought it was around 25#, but she didn't weigh herself and then weigh herself holding the bar. That bar was probably 10# at the most. We slapped 90# on it, so we probably DL around 100#, hence, my screaming body. Especially, because we haven't done DLs in awhile.
I need to clean today, but the vacuum will probably feel like it weighs a ton. Hmm...that's a good excuse NOT to clean. The wife needs a wife.
Hubby went to the gym. Said gym has a padlock on its door for not paying rent for several months.
Awesome!
Hey, you are doing this at home... Can I do a beginner's version of all of these things at home?... read more
